After leaving Gateshead Grammar School I served a 5-year craft apprenticeship as a Fitter with CA Parsons.

I then went on to University and got a Degree in Mechanical Engineering at King’s College, Durham University, (now Newcastle University).

I returned to CA Parsons and worked in their Design Office for 4 years before joining ICIand spending the next 6 years as Plant Engineer on their ammonia plant at Heysham, Lancashire.
I then spent the next 6 years with Air Products as Chief Operations Engineer, the first 3 based in London and the last 3 based on their plant at Rosenberg in Holland
In 1975 I returned to Lancashire where I founded an engineering manufacturing company,Alan Dick Engineering, which was acquired in 2001 by a Cambridge-based plc.  Since then I’ve continued to live in Lancaster and developed a portfolio of interests in both the public and private sectors and I’m a visiting lecturer in Management at Lancaster University.

I live in Lancaster with my wife Liz and enjoy walking with my dog, Harry.
I have fond memories of my time at Gateshead Grammar and maintain contact with former class-mates Fred Rodgers and Joe Bell and with David Barclay, who joined the school a few years before me.
